The power of choice

A picture is worth a thousand words!
100 Texan families camped outside a charter school for two days because parents want to enroll their kids in River Oaks rather than their traditional public school.
Milton Friedman’s dream is coming true. Parents want liberty.
Check out the Dallas Morning News article.

Wow. You put a market into education and you see what people really want. What a concept.
As a kid who grew up in Dallas and attended public school there, I think these parents are a little silly. Those schools are not as bad as some might want you to believe.
Parents camp out for posh private daycares in Highland Park as well. I think part of it, at least, is that this is fashionable. Red Oak sounds like one of those rich exurbs that grew seemingly overnight outside of Dallas. I’m guessing if you can afford to live there, you can pay for your kid to go to a private school if you don’t want them mixing with common folk. Ironically enough, we would typically kick butt against the private schools at math and language competitions.
The federal government has no business being involved in education, it is not part of their charter. To improve public education requires the removal of government (state and federal), unions and allowing local education to be the concern of local communities.
Colorado - I couldn’t agree with you more.
msondo - I just want to clarify a couple of things…
1) It’s about giving parents choice and not tying your education to a zip code.
2) River Oaks is not a private school but a charter school, meaning its a non-traditional public school.
