Miami Herald has the wrong facts on vouchers, too

Yesterday I blogged about Sun-Sentinel’s terrible opinion on school vouchers. Personally, I found their opinion filled with loopholes.
However, the Miami Herald’s opinion had substance and provides examples unlike the Sun-Sentinel. However, I still disagree with them.
Here is their logic on not removing the state’s Blaine Amendment in order to get school vouchers.
The 120-year-old ”no aid” constitutional amendment was conceived as an anti-Catholic measure. That is the past. In reality today, the amendment does nothing more than ensure the separation of state and church. State government funds religious organizations that provide secular services to people of any or no faith. Most notably, faith-based hospitals get state subsidies for treating indigent patients regardless of their religious beliefs.
Public funds are not paying for religious teachings. Nor may any Florida resident be denied state-subsidized services because of their religion. This is what the country’s Founding Fathers intended. Florida has a workable church-state balance. Don’t disturb it.
So at least they recognize that public funds are going to religious based institutions like hospitals. However, to say that current dollars aren’t teaching religious teachings is a lie.
See in Florida, the state offers high school graduates merit scholarships, Florida Bright Futures Scholarship, to help pay for college and guess what…they apply towards private religious colleges.
It gets better not only can students attend a school like Florida Christian College, but they can use their scholarship to get a divinity degree.
It seems the Miami Herald has it all wrong.
Our K-12 school system needs to function like our higher education system. The money follows the child, not the school.
Shame on you, Miami Herald for denying families the freedom to choose the best school for their kids.
