My experience with my health savings account
September 5, 2008 by libertyisforme
For those of you skeptical with health savings account (HSA) allow me to share a personal story.
Yesterday, I woke up with horrific knee pain. Two days ago, I decided to run three miles after being away from the gym for three weeks. Why? I signed up to run a 5K in Arizona.
However, I have had this knee injury since last November and did nothing about it. Like your sons and daughters I thought I was invincible, this will go away and it will be groovy.
Oh on the contrary, I am foolish.
Anywho, I saw a doctor and diagnosed me with a meniscus tear. Pretty much, I chipped a cartilage piece that I need to keep my knee from making popping noises and sustaining my weight.

Well, the best part of any visit is the bill - not really. This visit cost me $240.
HOWEVER, because I paid with my HSA debit card, meaning I paid cash. I got a 35% discount, bringing the bill down to $156.
Why did my doctor do this?
Because he doesn’t have to deal with the hassle of insurance companies paying him; the time a file claims person has to process the paperwork to pay him.
Lesson of the story: Healthcare can be affordable and HSA’s are lowering the cost.

Yay! HSA!
Great story! You are one of a legion of individuals realizing the benefits of Health Savings Accounts.
But, what about the tear? Won’t you need further treatment?

dork. you’re a freaking dork. i still think a SRI makes for a better story…
regardless, right on for HSAs.

JGM - For right now, all I can do is bring down the swelling and hope that it heals by itself. If it doesn’t then I guess I will be getting some surgery. -Yikes!
Wes - Agreed, SRI does make a better story. For all of you that don’t know what SRI means its a “sex related injury.”
YES JGM, I would also like to ask the same question Won’t you need further treatment?
Jon,
Yes, I had to get a MRI and get my knee checked out after my brace came off.
I paid for all of it myself thru my savings account.
My deductible is $2,500. Anything after that my insurance pays.
So far I haven’t reached the $2,500 mark for the year but when I do I will be covered.
Cheers.
